Yesterday, a french "official" announced that France will finally pay Haiti back for the 90 million gold francs it forced Haitians to pay in compensation for French slave trade losses. With interest and inflation, the total comes to 17 billion euros, or 21 billion USD.
Today AFP and Alter Presse have quoted french officials in Paris and Port-au-Prince claiming that the story was hoax. French officials have reiterated their refusal to pay the money stolen from Haiti in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.
Although, confusingly, another AFP story appears to claim France is in fact paying the money.
