We are pleased to share with you photographs from a brief press conference held on December 15, 2007 to celebrate the release of political prisoner René Civil, a Fanmi Lavalas organizer and leader of Jeunesse Pouvoir Populaire (JPP). The press conference was attended by numerous members of Civil's family and friends including Jean Mary Samedi, Presendieu Deshomme and former Cité Soleil Mayor Fritz Joseph. Soon after his release Civil held an interview with American journalist Kevin Pina and received congratulatory phone calls from former political prisoners Anne Auguste (So Anne) and former Prime Minister Yvon Neptune. Some Haitian human rights organizations estimate that dozens of political prisoners remain in jail.
